CBD products contain cannabidiol, a cannabinoid found in cannabis and hemp plants. They come as gummies, oils, creams, capsules and more. Levels Cannabis lets you compare CBD products by format, cannabinoid content and price. Choose your store to see today’s menu.
CBD vs. THC, CBG, CBN and CBC
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid from the cannabis plant family. CBD products are available in multiple formats, with ingredients, cannabinoid content and directions that vary by product. The product label is the best place to start when comparing what's inside. CBD is one of many cannabinoids. Labels may list several, so understanding their names can make product comparisons easier.

| Cannabinoid |
What to know |
| CBD |
Not typically intoxicating. Often the main cannabinoid in CBD products. |
| THC |
The main cannabinoid linked to the cannabis high. Some CBD products contain small amounts. |
| CBG |
A minor cannabinoid that appears in some blends. |
| CBN |
A minor cannabinoid often marketed in evening-use blends, though effects vary. |
| CBC |
A minor cannabinoid found in some multi-cannabinoid products. |
Is CBD marijuana? CBD is a compound found in both hemp and marijuana plants. The name of the compound alone doesn't identify the plant source. Check the product label for THC content and other relevant details.
Know the difference
Hemp Oil vs. CBD Oil
Hemp seed oil and CBD oil are not necessarily the same. Hemp seed oil comes from hemp seeds and generally contains no meaningful amount of CBD. CBD oil or hemp extract oil is made using other parts of the plant and should identify its CBD content on the label.
Hemp Seed Oil
Made from hemp seeds. The word “hemp” alone doesn't confirm that a product contains CBD.
CBD Oil
Look for a stated CBD amount in milligrams (mg), along with the ingredients and product directions.
Hemp-derived products sold outside licensed dispensaries may follow different rules. Licensed dispensary products are subject to applicable state requirements for testing and labeling.
Extract types
Full-Spectrum, Broad-Spectrum and CBD Isolate
These terms describe the types of compounds included in a CBD extract. Compare the product description with its label and available lab results instead of relying on the name alone.
01
Full-Spectrum
Contains CBD alongside other plant compounds and may contain THC.
02
Broad-Spectrum
Contains CBD and other compounds, with THC removed or reduced during processing. Trace amounts may remain.
03
CBD Isolate
Purified CBD without the other cannabinoids typically found in broader extracts.
04
Check the Details
Broad-spectrum products are generally processed to remove THC, but check the label and available lab results to verify the product's contents.

Total mg vs. mg per Serving
CBD labels may show the total amount in a package and the amount per serving. These numbers are different, so compare equivalent measurements before evaluating product strength or value.
15 mg
Per gummy in a hypothetical 300 mg package with 20 equal pieces.
33 mg/mL
Approximately per mL in a hypothetical 1,000 mg CBD oil bottle containing 30 mL.
A 1,500 mg topical jar indicates the total amount in the jar, not the amount applied each time. Actual amounts per use depend on the product and how much is used.
What to Compare on a CBD Label
- Total CBD per package and CBD per serving or mL.
- THC amount and other listed cannabinoids.
- Ingredients, serving directions and package size.
- Available laboratory results and product testing information.
- Price relative to the amount of CBD in the package.
One 2024 study of 202 CBD products reported that 74% differed from their labeled CBD amount by at least 10%. Lab results can help you assess product information. If you're new to CBD, read our guide on how much CBD to start with before comparing strengths.
